Oh hey book 2 is starting.

Same deal as before - this is a consolidated thread for discussing the latest pages, this time of Book 2 - Cloister. I can't comment to confirm or deny theories and speculation but I might step in now and then to clear up totally unintentional confusion.

Cheers!

That miasmic, in the background, with the eye patch... He's my favorite now.

I was promised boats! This is a nautical themed bar that's probably a franchise run by those lizard people!

edit: Wait I take everything back, they've got an arcade cabinet in the back. This is clearly an advanced and perfect culture.

What's a good buccaneer name for a one-eye Miasmic? Rageel? Tovaris? Bob?

I'm voting for Bob.

Bob has a simultaneous vintage charm and subtle irony.

You know, "Bob, Dark Scourge of the Adriatic," or "The Dread Corsair Bob". Being a bartender just adds to it.

"Who's the gargle with the eye patch?"

"Heard of The Flail of The Baltic Sea? The clan leader who took out the entire Malacotha drydock complex?"

"Holy crap balls, that's HIM?!"

"Yeah. Bob."

"...Bob?"

"Yeah. Don't piss him off or he'll kill your children, burn your ships, skin you alive, and water down your next beer."

"...the hell?"

"See what happens if you piss him off, if you don't believe me."

"Nah, Bob looks like a cool guy... I'm good,"

Grendel: That's what the Engineer said to Bueford.
I thought he was saying some word that meant money, not a person.
Or is it "The Grendel" as in some position?

Grendel is the name of the first monster in Beowulf. Given the context and the immediate response of "don't say his name here", I'm going with the crazy hypothesis that it's a name for a miasmic--or possibly a derogatory nickname, given that Beowulf's Grendel is a hideous monster.

I'm really enjoying the change of venue and perspective so far in Book Two. We had some hints as to the fog, it's properties, and it's effects on the planet and society in Book One, and it looks like the puzzle pieces are really going to start locking together in Book Two. The pacing of the story and the slow reveal of a familiar world gone topsy-turvey has been a great ride--can't wait for more of Book Two. Thanks Mr. Fleuter!

OK, maybe he read Beowulf and decided on that name for himself, since Bob was already taken...
(There are probably a lot of responsibilities to being a monster.)

The only other miasmic with an English name I can remember is "Beautiful Flower", so apparently miasmics do use names from the English language. Whether self-named or named by others, I couldn't really say. Also, I don't see why there couldn't be more than one miasmic named "Bob". It's a pretty bitchin' name and it strikes terror into the hearts of all who hear it, so why not?
